چکیده

Limited availability of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals in urban canyons is a preventive factor for implementing many position-based systems. Specifically for vehicles, a variety of applications such as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), navigation, and Location-Based Services (LBS) are not properly functional in dense urban areas due to constrained visibility of the GNSS signals. Tackling this problem, a Cooperative Positioning (CP) method is proposed based on the emerging vehicular communication medium, Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC). This method is functional with two Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites and infrastructure-vehicle communication using DSRC. A complementary algorithm, based on Doppler shift, is proposed for mitigating the multipath effect which is considerable in urban canyons. The experimental results verify the viability of the proposed method and its higher performance, about 25%, than that of a GPS receiver in an identical situation.

Vehicular positioning enhancement using DSRC

Road transportation injuries, environmental pollution, and wasted energy and time in traffic congestion cause considerable cost to society. Some examples are the $115 billion cost of United States traffic congestion in 2009 and its predicted $23 billion annual cost in Australia by 2020. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are increasingly being considered to mitigate these impacts. The ben...

Shadow Matching: A New GNSS Positioning Technique for Urban Canyons

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is unreliable in dense urban areas, known as urban canyons, which have tall buildings or narrow streets. This is because the buildings block the signals from many of the satellites. Combining GPS with other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) significantly increases the availability of direct line-of-sight signals. Modelling is used to demonstrate that...

Modeling GNSS Signals in Urban Canyons using Visibility Graphs

This paper addresses the problem of modeling and simulating RF-signals captured by receivers of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in urban canyons. The presence of tall buildings in urban canyons often block lines of sight between receivers and GNSS satellites, and therefore signals reach the receivers indirectly, after bouncing off buildings. These multi-path and echo-only effects are...

Vehicle Localization in Urban Canyons Using Geo-referenced Data and Few Gnss Satellites

Stand-alone Global Navigation Satellites System (GNSS) can provide a very accurate real-time positioning in good visibilty and signals conditions. Unfortunately, for a vehicle evolving in urban areas, those conditions are rarely satisfied, leading to debased computed location or lack of solution if less than four SVs are visible. A way to tackle such a problem can consist in fusing the raw meas...

TDOA Least Square Method for Positioning with Two GNSS Satellites over Time

GNSS is well known for its availability and accuracy but it suffers when operating in urban canyons, indoors as well as environments such as ports. This paper uses Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) measurements from two satellites over time to calculate the position of the receiver. The system was tested by masking out satellites to simulate buildings or objects along both sides blocking large ...
